IMSOCIO met for the second time to begin work on the first IMSOCIO project of the summer. At the end of the last event, students were given the task of keeping a log for the upcoming week so this week students wrote down their logs on an excel spread sheet of where they were, what they were doing, and when they were doing it. This very long and tedious process is the beginning of a map that will visually show students how and where they spend their time.

Post1

After, students where introduced to the other part of the project which is their maps being compared to those of South Korean students to show the different life each lives. As an introduction to the differences of Korean life, students performed a fishbowl exercise, an exercise where students sit in a circle with one student behind them. Then within the circle they discussed topics, like how see Korean life and questions about what they would want to know about the other students.

Schedule

For the final activity students created story boards of how they see their lives, or where do they see themselves in the future. The storyboard activity express their lives through a new point of view by using the questions of the fishbowl exercise on themselves.

The Beginning of IMSOCIO 2013 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=1403 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=1403#comments Wed, 17 Jul 2013 18:16:10 +0000 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=1403 SCAVHUNT2

IMSOCIO 2013 summer program started with students, new and returning, participating in a fun and ice-breaking scavenger hunt event to introduce them to the mapping program Mappler. Students downloaded Mappler’s mobile app “MapplerK” to view a mobile map that showed riddles and the area near to the answer of the riddle where a number card was hidden.

SCAVHUNT

The hunt started at eleven and ended around twelve with students being divided into three teams competing to collect the most number cards. However,  For the first time there was a tie with two teams collecting respectively seven number cards each so a tie breaker was made which ended with the winning team being given a ten dollar iTunes gift card as the prize. However, when the prizes where given the students surprised all the preceptors by deciding to give the rewards to the youngest members of IMSOCIO.

Community Mapping Presentation! http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=796 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=796#comments Thu, 12 Jul 2012 18:23:26 +0000 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=796

This Saturday, July 14th 2012, at 10:30am in the Records Hall Computer Lab located at 620 George Street in New Brunswick, New Jersey, IMSOCIO students will feature a community mapping presentation. The students will share their experiences on various projects they have completed in Franklin Township and surrounding municipalities using Mappler Mobile, a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software.

In addition to revealing how GIS technology can be used as a tool to demonstrate an issue affecting the community, these students will explain how their maps can also be used as an element of the solution to a particular social issue. Most of the presentation will be dedicated to a student-conducted sidewalk inventory which identifies all of the broken and missing sidewalks in a 5 X 5 block radius surrounding Pine Grove Elementary School in Franklin Township (our SRTS project). The students will speak to why this particular inventory is valuable to the community and the research they have conducted to figure out the processes associated with fixing and installing sidewalks.

We hope that you will be able to attend. If you have any questions about Saturday’s event, please feel free to contact Enrique Noguera, SOCIO Director at 732/853-6330 or enriquen@rci.rutgers.edu.

Safe Routes to School 2012 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=786 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=786#comments Wed, 11 Jul 2012 14:33:23 +0000 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=786 A walkability and cleanliness mapping event took place on June 23rd!  The IMSOCIO students participated in this event in an effort to assess and document the safety and pollution levels of sidewalks and crosswalks in Somerset.  This is the second Safe Routes to School project they had completed in the same area, near Pine Grove Manor School.  The data from this event will not only allow us to document safe routes to school for the elementary school students, but also see what changes have or have not been made since the last event.

To view more information about the event, visit our SRTS 2012 page under the “Summer 2012″ tab.  The interactive map, photos, and data charts can be found there as well!

First Summer Event! http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=521 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=521#comments Wed, 13 Jun 2012 14:05:01 +0000 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=521 Geocaching Event:

The IMSOCIO students participated in a mapping event on June 2, 2012. 20 markers were placed across the College Avenue campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.  The students were given a list of the latitude and longitude coordinates and hints to help them find the points.  Using a GPS device on their smart phones and the Mappler Mobile application, they were able to find the points and plot them on an interactive map.  The team that collected the most points won t-shirts.

Below is the interactive map the students made during the event

The interactive map can also be found here!

More photos from the event can be found under the Geocaching Event tab under “Summer 2012.”  Here is a link!

What is IMSOCIO? http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=36 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=36#comments Mon, 11 Jul 2011 21:01:41 +0000 http://www.imsocio.org/home/?p=36 IMSOCIO is an organization that was created through the partnership between SOCIO, Scholars Organizing Culturally Innovative Opportunities, and Dr. Wansoo Im of Vertices, LLC. IMSOCIO aims to encourage the academic progress of Hispanic high school students in Franklin Township by providing the support and resources necessary to facilitate their progression to higher education.

Located in Somerset, New Jersey, Franklin High School is home to the Warriors and the Spanish Club.  The Spanish Club boasts over thirty members and is known for its dancing and empanadas.  However, during the 2010-2011 school year, SOCIO, led by Enrique Noguera, Jon Robles, and Jose Bueno, began to expand its focus.  Spanish Club adviser, Nathaly Bracamonte, decided to provide SOCIO with the opportunity to be part of the Franklin High School family.  Spanish Club students began to share their meetings with SOCIO and learn what they were all about.  Events were held and both clubs gathered to celebrate together.  The goal for both clubs was to give students the opportunities they needed to attend college.  Many students in Spanish Club were not motivated or were under-informed about their options and potential. But with the support of SOCIO, students began exerting more effort and practicing for tests, including the SATs.  The impact that SOCIO was making became quite obvious.

The goal has now evolved for SOCIO and entails giving Spanish Club students, now also SOCIO members, the confidence they need to succeed in life.  It is possible for Latinos to overcome the social obstacles put before them and go to college.  Any student can achieve success if they TRY.
